Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 46 km southwest of David, Panama in the afternoon

A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near David, Distrito de David, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, October 3rd, 2022, at 4:53 pm local time at a shallow depth of 23 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Palmar (pop. 4,500) located 2 km from the epicenter, Manaca Civil (pop. 1,200) 3 km away, Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) 4 km away, Manaca Norte (pop. 1,300) 4 km away, La Esperanza (pop. 1,900) 12 km away, Divala (pop. 2,500) 18 km away, and Concepcion (pop. 17,700) 33 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pedregal (pop. 17,400) located 45 km from the epicenter, and David (pop. 82,000) 46 km away.
