The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 130 km beneath the epicenter near Chichibu, Chichibu-shi, Saitama, Japan, after midnight on Sunday, October 16th, 2022, at 12:25 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chichibu (pop. 58,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, Ōme (pop. 149,300) 18 km away, Hannō (pop. 86,300) 20 km away, Sakado (pop. 96,700) 27 km away, Sayama (pop. 160,800) 29 km away, Kawagoe (pop. 337,900) 35 km away, and Tokorozawa (pop. 339,400) 35 km away. In Saitama (pop. 1,193,400, 50 km away), Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600, 58 km away), and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400, 72 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
