Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Athens, NomarchÃa AthÃnas, Attica, Greece 4.9 quake 29 Nov 10:06 pm (GMT +2) The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Greece near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022, at 10:06 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Zarakes (pop. 940) located 8 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gerakas (pop. 29,900) located 45 km from the epicenter, Kifissia (pop. 47,300) 45 km away, Agia Paraskevi (pop. 59,700) 47 km away, Marousi (pop. 72,300) 48 km away, Chalandri (pop. 74,200) 49 km away, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 51 km away, Athens (pop. 664,000) 57 km away, Peristeri (pop. 140,000) 58 km away, and Piraeus (pop. 163,700) 65 km away.
