Moderate 4.5 quake hits near Ponce, Segundo Barrio, Puerto Rico 4.5 quake 29 Nov 6:41 am (GMT -4) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in Puerto Rico near Ponce, Segundo Barrio, only 18 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022, at 6:41 am local time at a shallow depth of 12.3 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Santo Domingo (pop. 3,600) located 4 km from the epicenter, Guayanilla (pop. 5,200) 5 km away, Yauco (pop. 20,300) 7 km away, Penuelas (pop. 6,800) 8 km away, Adjuntas (pop. 5,100) 14 km away, and Guanica (pop. 9,200) 16 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sabana Grande (pop. 9,000) located 18 km from the epicenter, Ponce (pop. 152,600) 19 km away, Maricao (pop. 1,200) 24 km away, Utuado (pop. 9,800) 25 km away, San German (pop. 12,100) 27 km away, Lares (pop. 7,200) 27 km away, Jayuya (pop. 3,600) 28 km away, Lajas (pop. 5,300) 28 km away, and Las Marias (pop. 1000) 30 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bayamon (pop. 203,500) located 77 km from the epicenter, and San Juan (pop. 418,100) 85 km away.
