Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 83 km southwest of Chiclayo, Peru early morning

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Chiclayo, Provincia de Chiclayo, Lambayeque, Peru, was reported only 24 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday, December 16th, 2022, at 5:23 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake.
