Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.3 just reported 129 km south of Pagar Alam, Indonesia
5.3 quake 14 Jan 5:40 am (GMT +7)

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Pagar Alam, Lahat Regency, South Sumatra, Indonesia, was reported only 25 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, January 14th, 2023, at 5:40 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.3, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pagar Alam (pop. 70,400) located 129 km from the epicenter.
