Small 3.3 quake hits near Porterville, Tulare County, California, USA 3.3 quake 10 Jan 7:34 am (GMT -8) A very shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Porterville, Tulare County, California, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, at 7:34 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.3, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in East Porterville (pop. 6,800) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Porterville (pop. 56,100) 6 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lindsay (pop. 13,200) located 13 miles from the epicenter, and Exeter (pop. 10,500) 20 miles away. In Tulare (pop. 62,300, 26 miles away), Visalia (pop. 130,100, 27 miles away), Delano (pop. 52,700, 29 miles away), and Bakersfield (pop. 373,600, 49 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
