An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 occurred only 28 minutes ago 66 km southeast of Gorontalo, Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 147.1 km beneath the epicenter near Gorontalo, Indonesia, in the morning on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, at 8:34 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Gorontalo (pop. 144,200) located 66 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Luwuk (pop. 47,800) located 110 km from the epicenter.
