Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 40 km southwest of Popondetta, Papua New Guinea
5.1 quake 18 Jan 7:42 am (GMT +10)

Papua New Guinea was shaken near Popondetta, Sohe, Northern Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 23 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9.9 km beneath the epicenter near Popondetta, Sohe, Northern Province, Papua New Guinea, in the morning on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, at 7:42 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 5.1, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Popondetta (pop. 28,200) located 40 km from the epicenter, and Kokoda (pop. 6,200) 44 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Port Moresby (pop. 283,700) located 110 km from the epicenter.
