Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 27 km south of Glan, Philippines after midnight 5.0 quake 30 Jan 12:23 am (GMT +8) A shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported after midnight near Glan, Province of Sarangani, Soccsksargen, Philippines. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake hit on Monday, January 30th, 2023, at 12:23 am local time at a shallow depth of 23 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Pangyan (pop. 5,300) located 16 km from the epicenter, Baliton (pop. 5,800) 18 km away, and Glan (pop. 24,300) 27 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Malapatan (pop. 19,400) located 44 km from the epicenter, Alabel (pop. 43,300) 59 km away, General Santos City (pop. 679,600) 59 km away, Polomolok (pop. 64,000) 73 km away, Maluñgun (pop. 52,200) 78 km away, Tupi (pop. 16,500) 89 km away, and Lake Sebu (pop. 21,800) 91 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
