Small tremor of magnitude 3.0 just reported 17 km southwest of Perpignan, France 3.0 quake 6 Feb 10:24 am (GMT +1) An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the morning on Monday, February 6th, 2023, at 10:24 am local time near Perpignan, Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie, France, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) at magnitude 3.4, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Banyuls-dels-Aspres (pop. 1,100) located 2 km from the epicenter, and el Volo (pop. 5,000) 3 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ceret (pop. 8,200) located 11 km from the epicenter, Elna (pop. 7,000) 12 km away, Thuir (pop. 7,900) 12 km away, Argeles (pop. 10,000) 14 km away, and Perpignan (pop. 110,700) 17 km away. In Figueres (pop. 43,300, 33 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
