Small earthquake of magnitude 3.1 just reported 20 miles southeast of Monroe, South Carolina, United States 3.1 quake 17 Feb 7:42 pm (GMT -5) Just 15 minutes ago, a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Monroe, Union County, North Carolina, USA. The tremor was recorded early evening on Friday, February 17th, 2023, at 7:42 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pageland (pop. 2,700) located 7 miles from the epicenter, and Lancaster (pop. 9,000) 17 miles away. In Monroe (pop. 34,600, 20 miles away), Indian Trail (pop. 37,100, 28 miles away), Stallings (pop. 15,300, 29 miles away), Rock Hill (pop. 71,500, 35 miles away), and Charlotte (pop. 827,100, 42 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
