Small tremor of magnitude 3.9 just reported 10 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada, United States 3.9 quake 1 Jun 5:23 pm (GMT -7) An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred in the afternoon on Thursday, June 1st, 2023, at 5:23 pm local time near Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Cold Springs (pop. 8,500) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Cold Springs (pop. 8,500) 4 miles away, Verdi (pop. 1,400) 7 miles away, Lemmon Valley (pop. 5,000) 7 miles away, Reno (pop. 241,400) 10 miles away, Sun Valley (pop. 19,300) 11 miles away, Sparks (pop. 96,100) 13 miles away, and Spanish Springs (pop. 15,100) 14 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Truckee (pop. 16,300) located 23 miles from the epicenter, and Carson City (pop. 54,500) 33 miles away.
