Small tremor of magnitude 3.5 just reported 13 km southeast of Mulhouse, France 3.5 quake 1 Jun 2:48 pm (GMT +2) A shallow magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France. According to the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), the quake hit on Thursday, June 1st, 2023, at 2:48 pm local time at a shallow depth of 12.7 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.4, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sierentz (pop. 2,600) located 3 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include St. Louis (pop. 20,900) located 12 km from the epicenter, Mulhouse (pop. 111,400) 13 km away, Illzach (pop. 15,500) 14 km away, Basel (pop. 164,500) 16 km away, Wittenheim (pop. 15,700) 18 km away, Liestal (pop. 12,800) 29 km away, and Colmar (pop. 65,400) 45 km away.
