Significant 5.4 quake hits near Lorengau, Manus District, Manus Province, Papua New Guinea

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.4 quake in Papua New Guinea near Lorengau, Manus District, Manus Province, only 27 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, at 10:30 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lorengau (pop. 5,800) located 133 km from the epicenter.
