Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.3 reported 44 km northwest of Acapulco, Mexico

A shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported early morning near Acapulco, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Friday, June 30th, 2023, at 4:08 am local time at a shallow depth of 13.7 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Las Compuertas (pop. 1,100) located 4 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tepetixtla (pop. 3,600) located 11 km from the epicenter, Tixtlancingo (pop. 3,600) 20 km away, Coyuca de Benitez (pop. 13,600) 26 km away, Bajos del Ejido (pop. 6,200) 30 km away, Acapulco (pop. 673,500) 44 km away, and Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) 44 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Técpan de Galeana (pop. 15,100) located 65 km from the epicenter, and Chilpancingo de los Bravo (pop. 187,300) 65 km away.
