Magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece 3.8 quake 11 Jul 12:52 pm (GMT +3) Just 20 minutes ago, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece. The tremor was recorded around noon on Tuesday, July 11th, 2023, at 12:52 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 17.5 km below the surface. The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Vafios (pop. 140) located 2 km from the epicenter, Stýpsi (pop. 1000) 4 km away, Petra (pop. 1,300) 6 km away, Molivos (pop. 1,600) 7 km away, Mantamados (pop. 1,100) 8 km away, Ayia Paraskevi (pop. 2,200) 10 km away, and Kalloni (pop. 1,800) 12 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mitilini (pop. 28,300) located 37 km from the epicenter, and Ayvalik (pop. 70,000) 38 km away.
