Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 110 km northeast of Bangkalan, Indonesia
5.1 quake 4 Aug 7:31 am (GMT +7)

A very deep magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Bangkalan, East Java, Indonesia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday, August 4th, 2023, at 7:31 am local time at a great depth of 574 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Bangkalan (pop. 62,200, 110 km away), Pamekasan (pop. 92,400, 121 km away), Gresik (pop. 73,600, 125 km away), and Kebomas (pop. 76,000, 127 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
