Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 38 km east of Palmira, Colombia 5.0 quake 3 Aug 5:09 pm (GMT -5) Colombia was shaken near Palmira, Municipio de Palmira, Departamento del Valle del Cauca, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 14 minutes ago, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake reported. The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 134 km beneath the epicenter near Palmira, Municipio de Palmira, Departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia, in the afternoon on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023, at 5:09 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include La Cumbre (pop. 2,400) located 24 km from the epicenter, Pradera (pop. 44,600) 33 km away, Florida (pop. 47,200) 38 km away, Palmira (pop. 248,000) 38 km away, El Cerrito (pop. 38,400) 43 km away, Guadalajara de Buga (pop. 118,000) 57 km away, Santiago de Cali (pop. 2,392,900) 63 km away, and Tulua (pop. 165,500) 68 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
