Death toll surpasses 1000 fatalities

Unfortunately, the death toll of last night's major earthquake in the High Atlas has increased and now stands at more than 1,000. As intense search and rescue operations continue, this number is likely to increase further.

Morocco's ministry of interior updated official numbers Saturday afternoon. It reported that at least 1,037 people were killed, most of them in the Al Haouz and Taroudant provinces, while fewer fatalities occurred in the Ouarzazate, Chichaoua, Azilal and Youssoufia provinces, as well as in the Marrakech, Agadir and Casablanca areas.

Certainly one of the main reasons for the high death toll was that the quake hit at night, when many people were asleep inside buildings.
