Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 18 km northwest of Acapulco, Mexico 4.6 quake 8 Sep 1:27 pm (GMT -6) An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred 35 minutes ago 18 km northwest of Acapulco, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 16.2 km beneath the epicenter near Acapulco, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico, around noon on Friday, September 8th, 2023, at 1:27 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Los Mogotes (pop. 1,300) located 4 km from the epicenter, Coyuca de Benitez (pop. 13,600) 11 km away, Bajos del Ejido (pop. 6,200) 12 km away, and Aguas Blancas (pop. 2,300) 14 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Acapulco (pop. 673,500) located 18 km from the epicenter, Tixtlancingo (pop. 3,600) 20 km away, Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) 51 km away, and Técpan de Galeana (pop. 15,100) 69 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chilpancingo de los Bravo (pop. 187,300) located 93 km from the epicenter.
