An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 occurred after midnight on Thursday, September 21st, 2023, at 12:54 am local time near Naples, Campania, Italy, as reported by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2.9 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 2.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bagnoli (pop. 23,300) located 1 km from the epicenter.
