Moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake 21 miles southwest of Modesto, California, United States 4.4 quake 18 Sep 9:13 pm (GMT -7) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in the United States near Modesto, Stanislaus County, California, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Monday, September 18th, 2023, at 9:13 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.7 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Diablo Grande (pop. 830) located 3 miles from the epicenter, and Patterson (pop. 21,500) 9 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Ceres (pop. 48,000) located 21 miles from the epicenter, Modesto (pop. 211,300) 21 miles away, Tracy (pop. 87,100) 22 miles away, Turlock (pop. 72,300) 25 miles away, Manteca (pop. 75,400) 25 miles away, Livermore (pop. 88,100) 31 miles away, and San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) 34 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
