The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in the United States near Modesto, Stanislaus County, California, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Monday, September 18th, 2023, at 9:13 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.7 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
