Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 21 miles southwest of Modesto, California, United States in the afternoon 4.1 quake 18 Sep 5:15 pm (GMT -7) Just 6 minutes ago, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Modesto, Stanislaus County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Monday, September 18th, 2023, at 5:15 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 0.6 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Diablo Grande (pop. 830) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Patterson (pop. 21,500) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Ceres (pop. 48,000) 21 miles away, Modesto (pop. 211,300) 21 miles away, and Tracy (pop. 87,100) 22 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Turlock (pop. 72,300) located 24 miles from the epicenter, Manteca (pop. 75,400) 25 miles away, Morgan Hill (pop. 42,900) 30 miles away, and San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) 34 miles away.
