Small magnitude 2.9 earthquake 45 km northwest of Caen, France 2.9 quake 12 Oct 6:50 pm (GMT +2) France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported a magnitude 2.9 quake in France near Caen, Calvados, Normandy, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Thursday, October 12th, 2023, at 6:50 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Arromanches-les-Bains (pop. 580, 25 km away), Courseulles-sur-Mer (pop. 4,100, 27 km away), Bayeux (pop. 16,000, 32 km away), Douvres-la-Délivrande (pop. 5,200, 33 km away), Ouistreham (pop. 9,100, 40 km away), Hérouville-Saint-Clair (pop. 24,300, 44 km away), Caen (pop. 110,600, 45 km away), Mondeville (pop. 11,600, 47 km away), and Saint-Lô (pop. 21,700, 61 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
