Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 44 km northwest of Calapan City, Philippines 5.1 quake 26 Nov 4:24 pm (GMT +8) A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, Mimaropa, Philippines, was reported only 26 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 121.8 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Sunday, November 26th, 2023, at 4:24 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 4.4, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Bauan (pop. 33,600) located 35 km from the epicenter, Batangas (pop. 237,400) 36 km away, San Pascual (pop. 39,400) 38 km away, Taal (pop. 39,700) 39 km away, Calaca (pop. 37,400) 43 km away, Calapan City (pop. 66,000) 44 km away, and Balayan (pop. 50,100) 44 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Calamba (pop. 316,600) located 84 km from the epicenter, Manila (pop. 1,600,000) 119 km away, and Quezon City (pop. 2,761,700) 125 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
