Moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake 49 km west of Focsani, Romania 4.5 quake 4 Dec 12:05 am (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 12 minutes ago 49 km west of Focsani, Romania, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 123 km beneath the epicenter near Focsani, Municipiul Focşani, Vrancea, Romania, after midnight on Monday, December 4th, 2023, at 12:05 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Romania's National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) at magnitude 4.7, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nereju Mic (pop. 1,500) located 11 km from the epicenter, Targu Secuiesc (pop. 20,100) 45 km away, Focsani (pop. 77,300) 49 km away, Râmnicu Sărat (pop. 38,500) 54 km away, Adjud (pop. 17,300) 62 km away, Săcele (pop. 29,900) 67 km away, Buzau (pop. 131,000) 68 km away, Tecuci (pop. 41,200) 69 km away, Brasov (pop. 276,100) 75 km away, and Comanesti (pop. 23,700) 77 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
