Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 17 km northwest of Yalova, Turkey late at night 4.1 quake 17 Dec 11:53 pm (GMT +3) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred only 13 minutes ago 17 km northwest of Yalova, Turkey, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11.2 km beneath the epicenter near Yalova, Provincia de Yalova, Turkey, late at night on Sunday, December 17th, 2023, at 11:53 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Çınarcık (pop. 7,600) located 9 km from the epicenter, Yalova (pop. 71,300) 17 km away, Maltepe (pop. 427,000) 24 km away, Ataşehir (pop. 361,600) 29 km away, Gebze (pop. 281,400) 29 km away, Sultanbeyli (pop. 286,600) 30 km away, Umraniye (pop. 573,300) 33 km away, Sancaktepe (pop. 241,000) 33 km away, and Istanbul (pop. 14,804,100) 35 km away.
