Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake 13 miles northwest of Big Spring, Texas, United States 3.4 quake Howard County, Texas, USA, Dec 20, 2023 02:19 pm (GMT +0) An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred only 14 minutes ago 13 miles northwest of Big Spring, Texas, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.3 miles beneath the epicenter near Big Spring, Howard County, Texas, USA, in the morning on Wednesday, December 20th, 2023, at 8:19 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ackerly (pop. 230) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Big Spring (pop. 28,900) 13 miles away, and Stanton (pop. 2,900) 20 miles away. In Lamesa (pop. 9,400, 31 miles away), Midland (pop. 133,000, 37 miles away), and Snyder (pop. 11,800, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
