Significant 5.0 quake hits near Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines
5.0 quake 29 Km NE of Hinatuan, Philippines, Dec 28, 2023 11:48 pm (GMT +8)

An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred 32 minutes ago 45 km northeast of Bislig City, Philippines, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 54 km beneath the epicenter near Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, late at night on Thursday, December 28th, 2023, at 11:48 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 4.4.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hinatuan (pop. 10,100) located 29 km from the epicenter, Bislig City (pop. 67,600) 45 km away, San Francisco (pop. 18,500) 61 km away, Bah-Bah (pop. 28,600) 65 km away, Tandag (pop. 29,000) 66 km away, Bunawan (pop. 15,500) 72 km away, Bayugan (pop. 40,600) 84 km away, and Monkayo (pop. 51,400) 98 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Butuan (pop. 309,700) located 114 km from the epicenter.
