Magnitude 4.3 earthquake strikes near Ioannina, Epirus, Greece 4.3 quake 5 Jan 11:51 pm (GMT +2) A moderately shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported late at night near Ioannina, Epirus, Greece. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday, January 5th, 2024, at 11:51 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 33.2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Lista (pop. 220) located 1 km from the epicenter, Filiates (pop. 2,100) 20 km away, Eleousa (pop. 3,500) 28 km away, Kardamitsia (pop. 3,200) 31 km away, Igoumenitsa (pop. 9,500) 31 km away, Ioannina (pop. 65,600) 34 km away, and Anatoli (pop. 9,800) 36 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sarandë (pop. 15,100) located 43 km from the epicenter, and Arta (pop. 21,900) 78 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
