According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, January 13th, 2024, at 10:08 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 126.7 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile at magnitude 5.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
