Magnitude 3.2 earthquake strikes near Salzburg, Austria 3.2 quake Austria Jan 19, 2024 08:28 pm (Vienna time) An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 occurred in the evening on Friday, January 19th, 2024, at 8:28 pm local time near Salzburg, Austria, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.6 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in St. Martin b. Lofer (pop. 830) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Lofer (pop. 1,200) 3 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer (pop. 16,800) located 19 km from the epicenter, Sankt Johann in Tirol (pop. 9,400) 20 km away, Bad Reichenhall (pop. 16,900) 24 km away, and Zell am See (pop. 7,600) 28 km away. In Salzburg (pop. 153,400, 38 km away), Freilassing (pop. 15,900, 39 km away), and Traunreut (pop. 21,200, 45 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
