Small magnitude 2.9 quake hits 19 km southeast of Bijapur, India late at night 2.9 quake 29 Jan 12:22 am (GMT +5:30) An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred late at night on Sunday, January 28th, 2024, at 11:52 pm local time near Bijapur, Vijayapura, Karnataka, India, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bijapur (pop. 271,100) located 19 km from the epicenter, and Basavana Bāgevādi (pop. 30,800) 20 km away. In Bilgi (pop. 16,300, 44 km away), Sindgi (pop. 33,800, 50 km away), Muddebihal (pop. 31,900, 51 km away), Indi (pop. 34,100, 56 km away), Bagalkot (pop. 97,300, 58 km away), and Jamkhandi (pop. 61,700, 61 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
