Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake 18 miles east of Salinas, California, United States 3.4 quake 1 Feb 11:28 am (GMT -8) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.4 quake in the United States near Salinas, Monterey County, California, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, at 11:28 am local time at a very shallow depth of 4.7 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.4 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tres Pinos (pop. 480) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Hollister (pop. 37,500) 13 miles away, Soledad (pop. 25,000) 17 miles away, Salinas (pop. 157,400) 18 miles away, Prunedale (pop. 17,600) 20 miles away, Gilroy (pop. 53,200) 26 miles away, Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 29 miles away, and Seaside (pop. 33,000) 29 miles away.
