Small tremor of magnitude 3.0 just reported 5 miles southeast of Brentwood, California, United States 3.0 quake 29 Feb 9:58 pm (GMT -8) Just 11 minutes ago, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Brentwood, Contra Costa County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Thursday, February 29th, 2024, at 9:58 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 1.1 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Discovery Bay (pop. 13,400) located 1 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Brentwood (pop. 59,000) located 5 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Oakley (pop. 39,800) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Antioch (pop. 110,500) 13 miles away, Tracy (pop. 87,100) 15 miles away, Livermore (pop. 88,100) 17 miles away, and Pittsburg (pop. 69,400) 17 miles away. In Stockton (pop. 305,700, 18 miles away), and Oakland (pop. 419,300, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
