Small 3.5 quake hits near Mount Buller, Victoria, Australia 3.5 quake 20 Mar 9:07 pm (GMT +11) An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred in the evening on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, at 9:07 pm local time near Mount Buller, Victoria, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 0.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kevington (pop. 50) located 15 miles from the epicenter, and Mount Buller (pop. 2,600) 24 miles away. In Mansfield (pop. 4,800, 34 miles away), Heyfield (pop. 1,900, 41 miles away), Alexandra (pop. 2,600, 42 miles away), Neerim South (pop. 1,300, 43 miles away), and Millgrove (pop. 1,600, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
