Significant 5.4 quake hits near Hama, Syria 5.4 quake 21 km east of Hama, Hama, Syria, Aug 12, 2024 11:56 pm (GMT +3) Syria was shaken near Hama, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 only 4 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9 km beneath the epicenter near Hama, Syria, late at night on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at 11:56 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Salamiyah (pop. 94,900) located 13 km from the epicenter. In Hama (pop. 460,600) located 21 km from the epicenter, Şūrān (pop. 30,700) 29 km away, Souran (pop. 30,700) 29 km away, Tibet Iman (pop. 29,300) 30 km away, Ar Rastan (pop. 53,200) 32 km away, and Tallbīsah (pop. 38,500) 39 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Aleppo (pop. 1,602,300) located 121 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
