Small tremor of magnitude 3.7 just reported 10 km southwest of Naples, Italy 3.7 quake Italy: Campi Flegrei Aug 30, 2024 09:23 pm (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred in the evening on Friday, August 30th, 2024, at 9:23 pm local time near Naples, Campania, Italy, as reported by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2.4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Bagnoli (pop. 23,300) located 3 km from the epicenter, Pianura (pop. 57,800) 4 km away, Soccavo (pop. 45,300) 4 km away, Fuorigrotta (pop. 71,800) 4 km away, Pozzuoli (pop. 45,600) 5 km away, Posillipo (pop. 22,900) 5 km away, and Quarto (pop. 37,700) 5 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Naples (pop. 959,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Giugliano in Campania (pop. 80,300) 12 km away.
