Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 5 miles south of Hamilton, Victoria, Australia early morning 3.4 quake 29 Aug 5:09 am (GMT +10) A very shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Hamilton, Southern Grampians, Victoria, Australia. According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Thursday, August 29th, 2024, at 5:09 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1.8 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.4 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hamilton (pop. 9,700) located 5 miles from the epicenter. In Casterton (pop. 1,600, 37 miles away), Koroit (pop. 2,000, 38 miles away), Port Fairy (pop. 3,300, 41 miles away), Portland (pop. 9,400, 42 miles away), Dennington (pop. 1,800, 44 miles away), and Warrnambool (pop. 29,200, 47 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
