Small magnitude 3.7 quake hits 6 miles northwest of Bishop, California, United States early morning 3.7 quake Inyo County, California, Sep 1, 2024 04:01 am (Los Angeles time) An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 4 minutes ago 6 miles northwest of Bishop, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 1.6 miles beneath the epicenter near Bishop, Inyo County, California, USA, early morning on Sunday, September 1st, 2024, at 4:01 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mesa (pop. 250) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (pop. 2,600) 4 miles away, and Bishop (pop. 3,800) 6 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Big Pine (pop. 1,800) located 21 miles from the epicenter, and Mammoth Lakes (pop. 7,900) 31 miles away.
