Small magnitude 3.6 earthquake 27 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States 3.6 quake 4 Sep 6:53 am (GMT -10) A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.9 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, at 6:53 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) located 5 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fern Acres (pop. 1,500) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Mountainview (pop. 3,900) 15 miles away, Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700) 17 miles away, Ainaloa (pop. 3,000) 19 miles away, Orchidlands Estates (pop. 2,800) 19 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 23 miles away, Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300) 24 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 27 miles away.
