Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes near Dexter, Nome, Alaska, USA 4.2 quake 18 Sep 2:41 pm (GMT -8) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 10 minutes ago 21 miles southwest of Dexter, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of miles beneath the epicenter near Dexter, Nome, Alaska, USA, early afternoon on Wednesday, September 18th, 2024, at 2:41 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Dexter (pop. 160) located 21 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include White Mountain (pop. 200) located 29 miles from the epicenter, Solomon (pop. 12) 39 miles away, Elim (pop. 340) 40 miles away, and Nome (pop. 3,800) 64 miles away.
