Just 8 minutes ago, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Gällivare, Gällivare kommun, Norrbotten, Sweden. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at 10:55 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 0 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Malmberget (pop. 6,000) located 2 km from the epicenter, Gällivare (pop. 10,400) 3 km away, and Koskullskulle (pop. 820) 4 km away. In Porjus (pop. 240, 43 km away), and Hakkas (pop. 370, 46 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
