Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 16 km east of San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic 4.7 quake 14 Oct 12:24 pm (GMT -4) Just 15 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near San Francisco de Macoris, San Francisco de Macorís, Duarte, Dominican Republic. The tremor was recorded around noon on Monday, October 14th, 2024, at 12:24 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pimentel (pop. 9,600) located 10 km from the epicenter, and San Francisco de Macoris (pop. 124,800) 16 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cotui (pop. 41,600) located 25 km from the epicenter, Nagua (pop. 33,900) 30 km away, Sabana Grande (pop. 16,800) 49 km away, and Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. 1,200,000) 65 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puerto Plata (pop. 146,000) located 84 km from the epicenter, Santo Domingo Oeste (pop. 701,300) 87 km away, Santo Domingo Este (pop. 700,000) 91 km away, and Santo Domingo (pop. 2,201,900) 92 km away.
