Small magnitude 3.6 quake hits 25 km southeast of Shillong, India late at night 3.6 quake 18 Oct 12:28 am (GMT +5:30) A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Shillong, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, India, was reported only 11 minutes ago by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Thursday, October 17th, 2024, at 11:58 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Shillong (pop. 132,800) located 25 km from the epicenter, Cherrapunjee (pop. 11,100) 46 km away, and Mairang (pop. 12,600) 49 km away. In Chhātak (pop. 39,200, 65 km away), Karimganj (pop. 55,300, 71 km away), Nongstoin (pop. 25,800, 85 km away), and Guwahati (pop. 899,100, 87 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
