Significant magnitude 6.0 earthquake 119 km southeast of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea

An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred only 9 minutes ago 119 km southeast of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 105 km beneath the epicenter near Kokopo, Kokopo District, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, after midnight on Thursday, November 7th, 2024, at 12:36 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.0 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kokopo (pop. 26,300) located 119 km from the epicenter, and Rabaul (pop. 8,100) 137 km away.
