Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.8 quake hits 11 km west of Cabanatuan City, Philippines early morning 5.8 quake 28 Nov 5:58 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred early morning on Thursday, November 28th, 2024, at 5:58 am local time near Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Central Luzon, Philippines, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 192.2 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Aliaga (pop. 34,000) located 3 km from the epicenter, Cabanatuan City (pop. 220,300) 11 km away, Talavera (pop. 64,600) 12 km away, Jaen (pop. 39,700) 19 km away, Gapan (pop. 79,100) 22 km away, Tarlac City (pop. 183,900) 29 km away, Concepcion (pop. 64,400) 29 km away, San Fernando City (pop. 251,200) 54 km away, Quezon City (pop. 2,761,700) 96 km away, and Manila (pop. 1,600,000) 99 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
