Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 70 km west of La Serena, Chile after midnight Chile was shaken near La Serena, Elqui, Coquimbo, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 31 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near La Serena, Elqui, Coquimbo, Chile, after midnight on Monday, December 30th, 2024, at 12:41 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Coquimbo (pop. 161,300) located 61 km from the epicenter, and La Serena (pop. 154,500) 70 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ovalle (pop. 77,100) located 103 km from the epicenter, Vicuña (pop. 13,500) 122 km away, and Monte Patria (pop. 13,900) 128 km away.
