Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake 39 km southeast of Karpathos, Greece A shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported early morning near Karpathos, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Sunday, December 29th, 2024, at 2:15 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Karpathos (pop. 2,200) located 39 km from the epicenter, Fri (pop. 360) 45 km away, and Agia Marina (pop. 440) 46 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palekastro (pop. 1,100) located 96 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
